German Patch released!

Alright, it's done! After nearly two years in development, we were finally
able to release the german breath of fire 2 patch.
The release two days ago was a bit rushed, unfortunately.
However, i just _had_ to finish it in September because development on
the original game was completed in september 1994.(the release was in december 1994, but i didn't want to wait that long.)

Also, i couldnt resist and added yet another feature in the last hours before release.
its now possible to select between translucent and opaque textboxes.
and best of all, you can do that all the time by changing the newly added option in the games configuration menu.
please note that this will alter the appearance of the dragon-tear that appears next to some textboxes, the way i did it was the most easy and compatible - remember, its a feature, not a bug. ;)
oh, and if the intro sound is skipping, its most likely the fault of your emulator.
it runs just fine on a real snes and on accurate emulators such as bsnes, and thats what counts for me.
the character descriptions have been removed from the intro because they just looked butt-ugly.
to complete the package, i also created a really nice pdf-manual.(only in german for now, sorry)

oh, and the game will also reliably detect if its running on a real snes and will display an additional warning telling the user that the patch is freeware and not be sold.(it will otherwise work perfectly on the real thing, of course)
this is for all the punks trying to sell cartridges with the patch.

Swoosh! Coole Sache! Musste echt lange überlegen, wie ich es schaffe, das Spiel auf Disketten zu kopieren ;) . Dank dir sitzt mein SNES jetzt wenigstens nicht mehr sinnlos 'rum und setzt Staub an.

This looks pretty cool in motion, but I'm definately waiting on the English text to really play it through. I did notice some oddities that might be considered bugs, so I thought I'd mention them.

I do want to stress though that I am not complaining, I'm providing a bug report because I think it might be helpful.


1) The game doesn't allow the opening theme to play all the way through. The timing of the title screen reset seems to be based on the position of the song rather than a timer, so I'm guessing either than the reset is triggering too early in the song, or the whole song is not included due to space constraints.

2) The character bio sequences that were supposed to be restored from the Japanese version don't seem to appear at all. (A cut feature?)

3) The Dragon Tear is under the textbox background, which looks a little wierd in transparent mode, and cuts off part of it in opaque mode.

4) Due to the way the battle backgrounds are extended by repeating the existing tile mapping, parts of Barbaroy, and I presume any boss made partially of BG tiles, are also repeated under the status bar. I list this for the sake of completion, but I suspect that the present state was the best possible method.

Found an error. When you leave town with Boche, and after it starts raining, if you head back to town, he says, "Warum gehst du zurueck ins Dorf? Das ist" and then there is garbly-gook displayed on the side of the screen.

1. d4s, you rock. Not trying to be a Germanophile, but I think a big "DANKE" is in order. So... "DANKE", "THANK YOU", and also an "ARIGATOU"!
2. This rocks. I've noticed no bugs.
3. This is to anyone else-- two things. One, the game's apparently for the American release. I thought it was for the Japanese version... Ah well, it's great all around. Two, if you just let the opening play without pushing any buttons, the song will play all the way through.

Habe einen weiteren Bug gefunden. Wenn Tapeta (Jean) vom falschen Prinzen gefangen genommen wurde, und man den Raum verlässt (nicht aus dem Schloss rausgehen), kann man nicht beim Item-Händler einkaufen. Dafür spricht er was von einer Versionsnummer. Dieser Screenshot sagt wohl alles ;)

Yes, the song plays, but it does not reach any sort of conclusion or fade out, it just stops in the middle of some lyrics when the intro restarts, which it seems to do at the same point whether you watch the intro or skip to the title screen. That's why I think the song is not complete due to space constraints and plays as far as it can.

(And I'm using BSNES, so it should work exactly as programmed)

The ROM it patches is aparently an unregioned one (has the (U) tag), and one of the less-common BOF2 ROMs around. That did surprise me at first as the cart check failed on both my Japanese ROMs. Thank goodness for Babel Fish. :)


@ D4S:

I didn't realize that the character info was intended to be in the intro sequence. I was refering to the bio screens that come up in the Japanese version after the character battle demos, which ARE in the English version, but missing from the patch. The previous updates just made it seem like those screens were going to be restored. No big deal, as I think they are translated on dragon-tear.net

Ich habe heute das Spiel gleich mal auf meine flash-card und ich habe einen bug endeckt!
Und zwar wenn man nach den 10 jahren in der stadt oder außerhalb in dem zelt jemanden anredet, dann erscheinen die wörter nicht ganz (also z.b. von ein fehlt das n oder anstatt folgt steht folg da).
Ich weiß nicht ob das an der flash-card liegt oder auch nicht^^

Hi. Gibt noch einen kleinen Bug, weiss nicht mehr, ob der in der normalen US-Version auch schon war.

Wenn man bei dem Kochwettbewerb im Froescheschloss die Insekten isst wird der Name der Aktuell vorne stehenden Figur benutzt, aber auch bei weiblichen Figuren stehen da maskuline Pronomen...

tolle übersetzung habs heute durchgezockt und hab eigentlich nur einen fehler gefunden

wenn man sich beim handwerker der die normalen häuser baut später etwas zusammen kocht steht da eine Portion für a Person aber es müsste ja für eine person sein

falls ihr aus bayern kommt so wie ich nehm ich den fehler zurück ;P

Habs jetzt durchgespielt. Hier noch alles, was mir aufgefallen ist:

Beim ersten Treffen mit Tiga sagt er an einer Stelle: "(...) ist kein goettin"

Waehrend Rinpoo bei Tiga ist (bevor man nach Bando geht): Rands Satz in der eigenen Stadt verursacht einen Fehler mit dem Zeilenumbruch.

Kann sein, dass das nur ein Emulatorbug ist, kanns leider nicht auf dem SNES ausprobieren:
Wenn Stan verwandelt ist, verursacht seine Kampffaehigkeit "Erneut" Grafikfehler.

So... You did that about 2 years? And now the German link is dead... Whaat a shame. I _would_ be nice if you release english version, but this blog seems to be dead after release. Do you even read these comments?

I doubt so.

So why I am typing this? Because I am big fan of Breath of Fire 2 (others sucked hard) and want it to be enchanced. Idea was unique and it looked so _beautiful_ (as long as SNES can be beautiful) and I waited and waited english version but...no.

This was result of 2 years of hard work? Patch was downloadable about 3 months and that was it. Finito. The end.

I hope you read this and start working with english version, since many wants it (as you can see the comments).

Hi - erstmal echt cool, daß ihr das klasse Game übersetzt habt - respekt!

Einen kleinen Fehler gibt es aber. Wenn man manchmal (!) ein Jagdgebiet wieder verlässt, bleibt der Bildschirm schwarz und man muss das Game resetten. Die Musik läuft zwar weiter aber der Bildschirm bleibt wie gesagt schwarz.

Ich hab keine Ahnung was es für ein Problem ist und womit es zusammenhängt - bei manchen Jagdgebieten funktioniert alles einwandfrei.
