English version is progressing

Just a quick status update:
Ryusui joined our team and will be handling the english translation work from now on.
He is progressing steadily and i can see he's putting lots of effort into the script and i'm confident he will deliver an excellent and accurate english translation. however, i'm not going to make any guesses about when the english version will be ready for release, so please just be patient for now.

Wow. This is the first time my moment of glory has been hell-spammed. -_-;

Anyways, work has been progressing smoothly. Barring inevitable rewrites to earlier sections, the main dialogue script is at approximately 2600 out of 3600 strings complete. The script isn't entirely in order, which means I have the Dragoniel/Infinity scenario done up until Deathevan reveals his true form and goes berserk, but the next scenario I have to translate is actually the Highland scenario (Sten's reluctant homecoming).

Keep an eye out for more updates!

It doesn't help matters that I'm something of a perfectionist. I'm probably not even going to consider beta testing until I myself have played the game through...and even then I'll probably find myself revising the script several times before I hand it out to anyone.

I've already experienced firsthand what it feels like to release a project that wasn't quite done...a certain pet project of mine went out the door with numerous game-breaking glitches, and one prominent typo that managed to evade detection for 6 months. ^_^;

Is the English version still being worked on? I can't tell when the comments here were made because they say time but not day.

By the way, how were you able to do a proportional font for the main dialogue? When I looked at the game, there was only enough VRAM for the kana and exactly 10 kanji.

I haven't involved myself in the hacking side of things, apart from a few spot welds I made to the lookup system for fixed-width characters. The 8x16 uses a lookup table; the 8x8 didn't until I fixed it. I was having serious trouble at first getting both to display certain characters...

So, bottom line: I have no clue how d4s did it, only that he did, it works on actual hardware, and he claims it took him a buttload of ASM spotwelds to get things to where they are now. Which incidentally means I'm stuck with FWF limitations for battle dialogue and item descriptions, but I'm working my way around that.

As for overall progress, I'm 5/6 of the way through the main dialogue script, though I know better than to make any estimates as to exactly when this will be ready for release. ^_^;

The script's not completely in order: right now I'm doing the dialogue for the people who can join your town. Oddly enough, the post-battle dialogue with Deathevan is in this final chunk. (On a side note, am I the first person to notice that the guard "El" in Tunlan who Sten asks to speak with is supposed to be Princess Elfarlan?)

Great news! Can't wait for it! Probably won't happen but are you by chance going to release information or a tutorial on HOW you imported an MP3 into an SNES rom?

5:16 PM

Blogger Ryusui said...

The first few seconds explains it all. d4s actually wrote his own sound library for SNES. I have no idea if the sound clips used in the intro are in MP3 format or not...I've never asked him. ^_^ But he actually managed to change the look of great swaths of the game...just about anything is possible, save for a VWF in the battle dialogue. XD

So anyways. I've been somewhat sidetracked lately: there's less than 200 strings to go, but I'm honestly not 100% sure everything I have thus far is up to snuff. I need to make sure what I've written is consistent, and furthermore, there is a chunk of dialogue after Deathevan falls which was excruciating to translate: nothing but mindless "I'd like to thank the Academy"-type drivel spewed by the main characters. Normally I'm able to take such over-saccharine crap and do something with it, but here I had no choice but to translate it almost directly. So naturally I've been a bit shell-shocked these past two weeks

I'll be back to work as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot for the updates Ryusui. Even when there's nothing to report, it's nice to hear from you.

I always thought this game had some character under that pathetic and seemingly censored translation it originally got, (although for some reason I really like Deatheven's dialog in the end game) and I'm looking forward to playing it again.

2:48 PM

Blogger Ryusui said...

Oddly enough, the only real censorships I encountered were relatively minor issues, mostly jokes of a somewhat more T-rated nature: Lin/Katt's bust size (or lack thereof, as the characters seem to think) is a running gag, Gedd uses his credentials as an excuse to feel up your female party members, several references to drunkenness are papered over...

Interestingly, many of Watts' riddles were changed for the U.S. version, mostly because the original answers wouldn't fit. The German version translates the English riddles, which means that the riddles which appear in my version will be yet a third set: they're based off the premises of the original Japanese riddles, but with the context changed for the sake of space and certain cultural differences. For instance, the first riddle asks "Who would go blind if they lost their ears?": the answers are all people in various conditions, the correct one being "a man with glasses" (a man with no ears can't wear glasses...unless they were wraparounds, I suppose, but that's beyond the scope of the question). My version asks the same question, but the answers are all animals instead: the correct answer is a bat (since they navigate by echolocation, a deaf bat would be...well, blind).

9:07 AM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Answers that are all animals sounds very suitable for this game. ^^

I always think it's funny when characters make fun of the breast size of someone who's perfectly well proportioned... and beautiful regardless. Hahaha.

I can't get your translation out of my mind, I wanna play it so much. <3

11:33 AM

Anonymous Devon_v said...

That's very interesting. I always thought that the game was sort of balanced in its presentation, but that it got oddly comical at times that I thought it should get more serious. I figured that the translator was trying to use comedy to defuse the darker elements.

And Katt's name is Lin? I thought it was Rinpoo. Or are the names still limited to four letters?

3:23 PM

Blogger Ryusui said...

This deserves a bit of explanation.

Yes, the character's original name is Rinpoo, technically making this the second time the name has been changed in translation. It's a personal aesthetic choice: I could call her Rinpoo if I wanted, but I...really, really don't like the name.

You might already be aware that the name of Ryu's partner is spelled "Boche" in the ending credits but "Bosch" in my version. That's because another Breath of Fire character is named Bosch, and his name is written in Japanese in the exact same way as the BoFII character. I'm talking, of course, about Ryu's "partner" in the much-debated Breath of Fire V: Dragon Quarter. (A lot of people hate the game. A lot of people love it. I'm in the latter camp.)

So here's why she's Lin and not Rinpoo or Katt: BoFV also has a character named Lin, who is an obvious riff on the catgirl archetype. She wears a bodysuit featuring prominent cat-ears and a tail, and at one point in the game she wears a mask with distinctly feline features. Also note that when written in Japanese, Lin's name is written with the first two characters of "Rinpoo", so technically the name is a truncation rather than a full-blown change. Seeing how Bosch's name is already a reference to Breath of Fire II, I wouldn't be surprised if Lin was an intentional reference to the BoFII character as well.

For the purists, I did include a bit of a compromise. The ending credits will give her full name as "Linpoo", with "Lin" in quotes as a nickname.

11:01 PM

Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm personally glad you feel that way too, because when I found out her original name was Rinpoo, I was sort of like;

"Rinpoo? ..."

Katt was pretty damn cheesy, but... it sounds a lot better. :P

I definitely think there's nothing wrong with just shortening someone's name when you're taking off letters that sound horrible... Such as poo. And since there's always the fun confusion between R and L, she could have easily been Rin or Lin...

Rin actually sounds pretty good too, but I like your reasonining behind using Lin instead. Even if I won't ever willingly touch Dragon Quarter. :P

Lin seems suitable to her, I can see her as a Lin. So, yay, boo to Rinpoo.

1:07 PM

Blogger Ryusui said...

Hey, don't diss Dragon Quarter. ^_^;

It probably helps that my only exposure to BoF prior to playing it was maybe about half of the GBA version of BoFII (wherein I was first introduced to the game's original, questionable translation): it's not a traditional RPG by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still good stuff. Sort of like NetHack with a story.

And yes, the translation is good, though you'd never know it from the manual (which refers to the game's "Skill Threading" system as "Skill Sledding"...that's right up there with "Equip Lod/Bait" -_-).

7:16 PM

Anonymous Devon_v said...

Dragon Quarter was interesting, but very weird for me. I like my RPGs pretty traditional, and my dragon forms simple to use, so it was hard to enjoy. I did like the free moving combat system though. That's why I was wondering about the names since Lin and Boshe were characters in V, and Capcom had a tendency to reuse a lot of names and general characterizations in the series.

Anyway, being a Woolsey fan, I have no problem with well-meaning edits. Some Japanese just doesn't work in English.

A BoF1 fix'd be nice... Even if it was only touch-ups to enemy names, item names, equipment names, magic names, a dialogue touch-up, changing Jade to Judas, Bo to Gary, Karn to Danq, Gobi to a truncation of Manillo, Ox to a truncation of Builder, Bleu to Deis, and Tyr to Myria...
Actually, that'd be awesome. Especially if it was for the GBA version... It fits in with d4s' hacking work very well, trust me.

I hadn't even found the string printing bug until about a month ago - and it won't be fixed until d4s gets back from Japan - and I'm still tweaking and finalizing details. Just recently I updated the item list to better match the names used in Breath of Fire III/IV, and I've been inspired to change the engineer's name yet again. These things can't be rushed.

When they do get rushed, you get crap. Capiche?

If you've been reading the thread on romhacking.net, you'll see that Ryusui actually has made great progress and shown incredible competence and care. The things holding up the english release now are some bugs that are unrelated to the translation.

And unfortunately, to fix these bugs, d4s is needed, and he's vanished. :(

Come on d4s, where are you? A whole community is depending on you to help Ryusui out!

that's great news! I've been following the progress on RHDN forums from time to time and it would have been a real waste of talent and effort to let it die.

cheers!

d4s is no longer involved, he gave Ryusui all the resources he'd need to finish it.

Ryu's working on it, fixing various bugs, still has to do another edit of his script, and has at least 2 other projects ongoing.

Further, since this page is d4s's, I'm guessing that, whenever the project IS finished, it'll be announced at romhacking.net, and not necessarily here. So keep an eye over there.

It's coming, it's coming. I'm just a rabid perfectionist and sometimes I need a little break. Turns out the bank is broken and I need to fix it. Seems every time I turn around there's something else I need to fix, in fact. That's the nature of the beast.

BoF2 will hit beta when I've hammered out all the bugs I can find. It will be released when I hammer out all the bugs everyone else can find.

What happened to the RHDN thread?

Basically, some jackass called massivedamage showed up demanding I "admit I was wrong" for calling the character "Lin" instead of "Rinpoo". Things escalated and RedComet locked the topic; it was supposed to be unlocked the next day, but it apparently got deleted instead somehow.

Anyway, I made a new topic, so check it out.

Check out romhacking.net and see if there isn't something under Documents or Utilities for that. If you don't find what you need, try asking a question under General Romhacking.

Good, I'd like to see the full retranslated glory of BoF 2.

I remember borrowing the original PAL cart and playing it until the last when I was a kid, until I've grown and noticed some translation errors and/or corn-ish speeches that I haven't noticed since then, but c'mon I was just a kid back then....

But take your time and finish the project as soon as you can, I will be waiting for it as long as it doesn't die...

If it does you're next...

hahahaha... Just Joking.

:)

Keep up the darn good work!

I think that you doing this is pretty funny. I have been playing through BoF II for the fifth time or so, and I got to thinking about how terrible the translation was. I got to thinking about hacking the font of the ROM and fixing the names and the translation overall. I typed it in for a larf, and here you are. Saves me the time. Good Job!

This project is fucking dead. Why don't the people behind it release what's done to the world as open-source, and let someone else who has the time to finish it do so.

Why don't you look for news in the places where it's actually being posted?

The project has been in beta for the past few weeks. For most intents and purposes, it is done. I could post a perfectly playable patch right now...if I were absolutely insane, that is. The beta testers have ferreted out bugs and typos my initial alpha missed, and their suggestions have proved invaluable in resolving some long-standing issues. The finished English version will overall be much more polished than the original German one: there are some features I had to take out, such as the 3D world map effect (which broke certain text boxes) and transparency in the battle menu (which resulted in some annoying graphical problems in some battles), but I believe you will all find the bugfixes and general improvements well worth a minor sacrifice or two.

Breath of Fire 2: The Fated Child is coming, bigger, badder and better than ever. Be ready for it.

Or you could check my blog at http://theryusui.googlepages.com, which updates approximately once every Mayan Long Count. ^_^;

Keep up the good work. I love this version of the game. It brings a new look to a classic RPG I still love playing to this day. I've been a Breath of Fire fan for years upon years. Hope to see the English translation finished.

Hey Bof2 Team

What programs and editors did you use to make the new patch? I am very interested in hopefully acquiring them because I have a couple of ideas for a possible expansion in the story of Bof2. Love the German patch, looking forward to the English translation. Romhacking.net made fun of my ideas, so I am hoping that you don't make fun of my ideas, and actually hear me out. I only have the ideas in assorted documents.

Not to shoot you down, but neither d4s nor I have done anything to extend the game in the way you're describing: he gave the game a facelift and tweaked some things so that a proper translation could be fit into the ROM, while I tweaked things further and provided a proper English translation.

We haven't touched the game's event code at all, or modified anything of real consequence to how the game plays, apart from the addition of a run button. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but there's no secret arsenal of BoF2 power tools we've been hiding: it's a SNES assembler, the famous Atlas inserter and a home-rolled formatting app (not quite ready for primetime yet) that's been converting our code and scripts into the kick-ass BoF2 retranslation you're all waiting for. Oh, and the tag team duo of Geiger's Snes9x Tracer and VSNES have been invaluable for the debugging side of things.

There's nothing stopping you from doing your own homework and figuring out how to implement your grand plan of expanding the world of Breath of Fire 2 by yourself, however. But the stuff we've been using would be of precious little use to you.
